Cold War Kids "Hospital Beds" - Live

In March, Spin Magazine declared Silverlake, CA the "next big scene." Personally, I feel like the actual "next big scene" is the entire state of Texas. If you disagree, this guy will do his best to convince you otherwise. As it turns out, two of the front runners from these two scenes (Cold War Kids & Sound Team) are on a national tour together! Coincidence or RIAA consipiracy? This has yet to be determined.

Cold War Kids are out representin' the Silverlakers and if every other band in Silverlake is even half as tight as the Kids, then it would be pretty difficult to argue with Spin. Sadly, I've been to Silverlake and they aren't. Regardless, CWK play like a band of lifelong best friends. They pat each other on the back midsong. They constantly move around the stage but never get in eachother's way. They have that nonverbal communication that only comes from countless nights driving around town with nothing to do. "Hospital Beds" seems to be everyone's favorite song. I was on the fence before the show but this performance pushed me all the way over.

Here's an mp3 of the video - Hospital Beds (Live - 7/22/06)

Joe and Matt were there too.

To me, that band sounds sounds like Foreigner or Styx or some other awful 80s shit like that.

Good performance. Bad song/boring writing. Yet another overhyped band on the blogs.

i adore the cold war kids but i have to admit this isn't the best recording of hospital beds. the audio isn't very good here but i like the visuals. i love the part when Maust pats Nathan Willett on the back. i prefer the video from the troubador. the piano sounds way out of tune on this recording and the tempo is a bit slower than usual.

the haters and naysayers on this blog don't know what they're talking about. there's no way willett sounds like maroon 5. if you take the time to really listen to their EPs, you'll appreciate the craftmanship of the music and lyrics.

amen katrina. i think anyone comparing Willett to Maroon 5 is ignorant and has extremely limited perspective.

and sorry, pete, if i sent some of the asshole anonymous douchebags from my blog over here.

CWK sounds nothing like M5. Funny how one person says they sound like manufactured indie rock and another says they sound like a Top 40 band. Hmph. Either way, they're the only blog buzz band I've seen lately whose live performance held up to their recorded output. Good for them. Hell, *great* for them.

On a side note... although people forget it now, there was a time when M5 wasn't so hated and overplayed. I taped them about 3.5 years ago at (now defunct) Cotton Club and it was a darn good performance. Had no idea who they were at the time, really, and was dragged to the show by a friend. But I enjoyed it.

CWK rock. The sound is a bit off here, but they are sweet in concert. They put on a good show.

not his best vocal performance.

i wasnt too impressed at Lollapalooza, but they are a very intimate band, not for big venues or trying to have a huge sound. this sounds like its trying to stretch their sound out. Plus there isnt enough piano.

Anyone who has something negative say about CWK (or any other band who writes truly original music)obviously has too much free time and energy on their hands and then they all unfortunately feel the need to waist all that energy on hating something as innocent as music..."good" or "bad".
If you want to waist your energy on music-bashing, then go bash unoriginal music...which there is plenty of.
Better yet, shut up and listen to the music. If you don't like it, go find something else you do like.
WHEN DID EVERYONE BECOME A CRITIC?
NO WONDER THERE'S SO MANY UNORIGINAL POP STARS & COVER BANDS OUT THERE....BECAUSE APPARENTLY PEOPLE WOULD RATHER BASH AN ORIGINAL ARTIST, WHICH ULTIMATELY SAYS THAT YOU WOULD RATHER HEAR THE SAME RE-GURGETATED SHIT FROM THE SAME BULL SHIT BANDS. AND THAT MY FRIEND, MAKES YOU A COMPLETE AND TOTAL DOUCHE BAG. ADMIT IT.
SUPPORT ORIGINAL MUSIC.
IF YOU CAN'T BRING YOURSELF TO DO AT LEAST THAT, THEN SPARE SPARE THE REST OF US FROM YOUR IGNORANT COMMENTS.
FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO FIGHT....GLOBAL WARMING, POVERTY, DOMSTIC VIOLENCE...THE LIST IS INFINITE.
If you HAVE to be a critic, then go find something that actually deserves your scrutiny.
