Show Review: The Walkmen - 3/12/07
My friends and I discussed The Walkmen after seeing them play at the Southgate House Monday night. It was interesting. We unanimously agreed that we liked this band a lot but not one of us owned any of their albums. Why is that?

Their overall sound is distinctive and consistent. It would make sense for a Walkmen album to be good. Any album with a song as amazing as "The Rat" is probably worth owning.

And maybe that's the problem. "The Rat" is just too good. They set the bar so high, it makes every other song seem worse than it is. "Louisiana" is off their most recent album and I like it a lot, but when you play it next to "The Rat," it comes off as tame.

On one hand, I would never ask for an album of ten variations on "The Rat." On the other hand, how awesome would that be?My friends and I discussed The Walkmen after seeing them play at the Southgate House Monday night. It was interesting. The album has no songs that sound anything like the rat. However, I would venture to say that many of the Band's fans got into them through the rat. The only songs taht sound anything like "the rat" are "Little house of savages" and "Thinking of a dream I had" neither of which were played on monday but were played the last time the walkmen came to newport in september of 2005. I would say that people that like the song "the rat" would be more interested in their first or third albums.
Let me make sure I understand what you're saying...
People that like "the rat" should buy the albums that DON'T have "the rat" or any songs that sound anything like "the rat"?
I think the review is spot-on. I heard "The Rat" and instantly realised it was somewhat of an anthem. It leaves you expecting something else entirely than what you actually get with the rest of the Walkmen catalogue. Despite being overshadowed by this song and what it may lead you to expect, I really grew to love many of their other tracks. I downloaded "In the New Year" from the brand new album and listened to it all weekend - it is a great song but I had to listen to it a bunch of times to realise. It's funny because I went to see the Walkmen and they didn't play "The Rat". They still rocked it like no one else can though!
