Feature: The Lovely Feathers

The Lovely Feathers have a lot of energy. Significantly more than other bands you've probably seen. It's great watching them perform because there's always a chance they'll take it too far and things will implode. They didn't when I saw them but hey, there's always next time.

Show Review: Small Sins w. The Little Ones - 11/17/06

What a fun show! The Little Ones were wonderful once again. They all look like they're having such a good time together and it's totally infectious. If you don't like them then you probably don't like pop music...or being happy.

The Little Ones finished their set with "Lovers Who Uncover" which actually got some people in Alchemize moving. This is a fairly rare occurrence. And the dancers seemed to keep their shoes on because when Small Sins started up, the place was still bouncin'. I had missed the Small Sins set at Desdemona so here was another chance for me to see these crazy Canadians. One of their keyboards started to malfunction when the guy with the hat began mashing the keys with his maracas. The best part of this was watching the other band members laugh instead of helping out. Nice.

Guest Director: Adam Patrick Jones

A little over a week ago, I was contacted about the idea of having a "Guest Director" on The Anchor Center. I was all for the idea as long as the guest director didn't, well, suck. I was sent the following promo for Nashville singer/songwriter, Crystal Thomas. The music is charming, the location is breathtaking, and the pacing is perfect but most importantly...it doesn't suck.

So, please welcome Adam Patrick Jones, the first ever guest director on The Anchor Center and enjoy this fine piece of work he's submitted. Hopefully, it won't be the last. Thanks again, Patrick!

Show Review: Dosh - 11/3/06

This was one of the most uninspiring shows I've ever seen. When I saw Weezer, I wanted to buy a guitar and play songs in my garage. When I saw The Strokes, I wanted to buy Cons and wear a leather jacket. When I saw The Arcade Fire, I wanted to join a band with all my friends and shout in unison. But when I saw Dosh this past Friday night at Alchemize, I didn't want to do anthing. Because with Weezer, Strokes, and Arcade Fire, I could do the things they did or at least attempt to. With Dosh, I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Whatever it is that he does, it's completely spellbinding. As he built his songs, I kept trying to listen for previous loops I had watched him create but I couldn't do it. They were recursively swallowed up. It was a one-of-a-kind performance so I wouldn't really get my hopes up for many Dosh ripoff bands...

And I can't tell what song this is. In fact, I couldn't recognize any of his songs. The only reason I know the first one was "The Lost Take" is because he announced it afterwards. So, here's another one. It's fun to watch but I have no idea which song it is.
